In praise of adaptability

Work is shifting rapidly. There's a "restructuring" afoot.

Yes, that's right, the dreaded "R" word.

Like quicksand, teams are losing contributors, watching them be whisked away to other departments. Responsibilities are building for those holding down the fort. Communications are becoming more crucial.

"Do more with less" is becoming the hallowed refrain.

With all this immense change, one skill more than any other will rule the day and save our hides. That skill, that virtue, is adaptability.

Things will be more difficult. Things will be more uncertain. It is by remaining adaptable that we will emerge not weakened, not damaged by the turmoil, but rather stronger. Glowing with greater capacity than ever before. We are antifragile. Kelly McGonigal gave a great TED talk on the benefits of stress.

If you haven't seen it yet, it is well worth your time.

Of course, not all stress is good stress. But the stress we feel when stepping out of our comfort zone to achieve something we want? That's good stress. That's our body coming alive so we can become more. That's our body allowing us to focus intensely on this moment to reach toward our highest outcome. That's the kind of stress we will seize on during this moment of uncertainty.

To borrow a page from the venerable Bruce Lee, it's time to be water, my friend.
