What are we doing here?

Have you heard this question in conversation before?
It often arises in situations where a team of well-meaning co-conspirators tries to achieve something challenging together.
It usually doesn't feel great to hear, but it’s usually a good question to ask.
It never hurts to reexamine how we got to wherever we are right now. If it does hurt to do that, it's time to start reframing so your story works better for you. And it might be time to start changing some behaviors to align more truly with your goals and values.
It can be especially helpful in a meeting where some may not want to speak up, or others may not want to back down. It can be something of an equalizer.
Never underestimate the power of restating something obvious in a meeting. Sometimes, it can trigger a small understanding that makes the difference, the one that helps everyone come to their senses.
PS - variations include "What objective are we trying to achieve here?" or "What result do we want to bring about here?" or even "What do we want them to do next?"
