Communication starts with empathy

"Communicate" comes from the Latin communicare - to share, or to make something common.
Over the long term, sharing can't happen without both sides giving and both sides receiving.
Following, effective communication requires understanding and investment from both sides. It require a willingness to receive the other's thoughts just as you expect the other to receive yours - or if no one is receiving anything, why even waste time trying to communicate in the first place?
The interesting thing is, leading with empathy works best when you want to cooperate with someone to create something, or when you want to come to an agreement with another person on something.
But it goes farther. Even if your main objective is to merely elicit compliance of an order, it’s not a bad foundation to start from either. You're likely to come away with better outcomes for more people.
